Senator Proposes Bill After Flagpole Death
Comments 0 | Recommend 0LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A state senator is proposing legislation following the death of a 5-year-old girl who was struck when a badly rusted school flagpole snapped in high winds.
Democratic Sen. Gilda Jacobs of Huntington Woods wants to amend a playground equipment safety law to add requirements for flagpoles. The bill also would require that replacement flagpoles be made of aluminum or another material considered to be high-strength and lightweight.
Angel Pocock-Smith of Oak Park was killed April 16, 2007, in a courtyard at Roosevelt Primary School in Ferndale.
Jacobs says she hopes to avoid any similar accidents in the future.
